What’s on in May

Live art, comedy, music and a cinema in an Egyptian art-deco hall, unless State Daddy grounds us inside our 4 walls again, this May there is a hell of a lot to do in Perth.

Photobomb at The Corner Gallery

Is it still graffiti if it’s consensual? Perth Artists Anya Brock, Jackson Harvey, James Giddy, Artbyrow and Doris Swart take to the canvas live to paint their signature styles onto photoprints by Cait Miers at The Corner Gallery, on Saturday May 22. There will be live music (musicians soon to be announced) and a silent auction of the works on the night, with the proceeds going to each artist’s charity of choice.

Perth Comedy Festival

Back for 2021 and running through to May 16, the Perth Comedy Festival is bringing the best local, national and even, surprisingly, international names to venues all around Perth. From seasoned acts The Umbilical Brothers to Insta comedian Nat’s What I Reckon and award winning newcomer Rudy Lee-Taurua and so many more, there’s a comedy style for all tastes. Get out there and have a laugh, you’ve well and truly earned it!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Between binging new eps of Aussie Drag Race, catch an original Aussie Drag fave IRL. Priscilla The Musical hits Crown Theatre from the 7th – 30th May. Expect outrageous costumes and iconic songs. Starring Perth Drag Queen Cougar Morrison and Kath and Kim’s Pete Rowsthorne, it’s set to be nothing short of fabulous.

Sly Withers

Perth boys Sly Withers bring their self-professed “feelsie indie-punk” to The Rosemount on Friday the 7th. Following the release of their latest single ‘Clarkson’ the boys have been working on their new album ‘Gardens’ due out in June. Fingers crossed they’ll offer a sneaky-audio-peak at a few yet to be released songs.

Freo Urban Wine Walk

Like a treasure hunt for the winos among us, the team from Urban Wine Walk have handpicked their favourite Freo bars and restaurants and coupled them with the state’s best wineries to bring you a self-guided wine tour across 2 Saturday’s: 15th and 22nd of May. Grab your mates to set out on an adventure through the historic streets and enjoy wine tastings and special food offers at the coolest new and well established venues our favourite port-side town has to offer.

Girls School Cinema

Kicking off for another season, Girls School Cinema returns on May 6. Their program line-up promises some awesome cult classic movie doubles and new release blockbusters. Toast some marshmallows by the fire outside and grab a Melts Gourmet Toastie before jumping on a beanbag and cuddling up to your friends to watch a flick in the Egyptian art-deco hall. 100x better than a lonely Netflix sesh.

The Jungle Collective

Plant parents unite! You might be on the hunt for more plant babies, or maybe you’ve killed them all and need new victims, either way The Jungle Collective is hosting their Huge Plant Warehouse Sale on May 15 in Bayswater. With indoor plant favourites and some rare varieties available, there’s something on offer for all shades of green thumb. And if you wear a kooky hat, you’ll score $5 off your purchase (T’s & C’s apply).
