Pack your mozzie spray and find your sleeping bag, we’re going camping at Fringe World!
Campfire is as refreshing as a breath of fresh bush air – pure circus skill, comedy and excellent production quality.
The brainchild of Melbourne performance company Split Focus, the show follows two mates on a camp adventure who suddenly realise they’re not alone – an animalistic spirit begins to follow their every move. What follows is wild escape, marshmallow toasting and the beginnings of a beautiful friendship.
This sweet and playful narrative is the vehicle for each performer to demonstrate their immense talent, either in solo pieces or as an ensemble. Campfire demonstrates a wide range of impressive skills and tricks including aerial, tumbling, floor work and clowning. In the intimacy of the Gold Digger tent, it will take your breath away.
The lighting and sound design is flawless. Each backing track and lighting change perfectly sets the mood from happy exploration to escape. There is nothing quite as engaging as a strobe lighting scene. Chef’s kiss.
The production does itself a disservice by describing itself as ‘horror’ when it couldn’t be further from the truth. The show is saturated in sweet comedic moments and a self-deprecating humour which makes it accessible to any Fringe audience member – children, families, first dates and friends. There are more abs than there are jump scares – and that says more about the number of abs.
Overall, Campfire is fun, impressive and a little chaotic in the best way. If you like circus, physical theatre, or just want a light hearted frolic at Fringe, then pack your camping stove and head to the Pleasure Garden.
Campfire is on at Fringe World from Feb 4-15.
