Created by Eye Catching Circus, an all‑female Taiwanese ensemble, #since1994 is a charming contemporary dance and circus show that will make you laugh, gasp and fill you with hope.
The show explores the pressures and expectations placed on young women while showcasing extraordinary physical ability. The performers defy gravity on symbolic frames and move through scenes themed around identity, competition and support. The cast shifts from tumbling and contorting to hanging suspended in ways that seem impossible, and despite the physical intensity, they maintain a sense of ensemble unity.
The table routine in particular is a Fringe World first I’m sure – and is guaranteed to take your breath away if the audible gasps in the audience is anything to go by (mine included!).
#since1994
This show is unabashedly filled with heart in every chapter of the story. This is not a 60-minute routine of rapid fire tricks and tropes, it’s an expression of the multitudes we all often feel within ourselves. Some scenes are playful or loud, others contemplative and quiet. You will leave with a heart filled with joy and appreciation.
Visually, the performance uses a minimalist black‑floor setup, but lighting and movement create an dynamic atmosphere that matches the change in mood. From any angle in the round tent, you are guaranteed to be engaged – which is often a difficult brief to meet with floor based acrobatic routines. The Eye Catching group pull it off with ease. Some of the music-less transitions would benefit from some sound – if only to drown out the Priscilla in the Dessert soundtrack coming from next door and keep the audience from straying in focus.
The show is captivating for all ages, from kids to adults, which speaks to its emotional and visual accessibility. In a Fringe filled with hot spice, this is the perfect show to enjoy with family, colleagues and friends alike. Overall, #since1994 is more than a circus show—it’s a bold, thoughtful, and empowering performance. It leaves audiences not only impressed by the physical feats but moved by the sincerity and strength of the ensemble.
#since1994 is on at Perth Fringe from Jan 22- Feb 1.
