Creative, suspenseful and silly: Hard Cheese

Hard Cheese: Rat in the City: One Last Bite is the imaginative work of Boorloo based theatre company Dream Simulator. And when I say imaginative, I really mean it.

The show centres on rat-man “Hard Cheese”, a former detective on the hunt for Real Life Actress Alison Brie. It’s packed with unique characters and charming, self aware comedy.

My first impression of the show was through their incredible set, featuring cardboard scenes and props that are a testament to the creativity and skill of the team. I loved how characters were often first introduced simply by silhouette. Another stand out element was the cardboard characters used as extras in certain scenes. They are a work of art.

Hard Cheese Rats in the City Sean Breadsell.

Hard Cheese is played by Lachlan Ives, who I have to say, has some brilliant lines throughout the performance. Big congratulations to the writing team for nailing the 1940s noir theme whilst sneaking in cheeky puns and absurdist comedy. And all of this is brought to life by perfectly executed stage, lighting and sound design. There wasn’t a single missed cue (which is particularly impressive given I attended on opening night).

Each member of the cast gave a stellar performance. I have to include a special mention of both Eillen Warden and Tash Pearson who had the extra challenge of puppetering. Both of them truly delivered, and Rat Rat now holds a special place in my heart. If you’re thinking of heading along, I recommend you try to snag a front row seat so you don’t miss moments with the tiny rat protagonist.

It’s a show you won’t forget!

Hard Cheese: Rat in the City: One Last Bite is on at the Blue Room Theatre from Jan 27 to 31.
