There’s no need to rummage through your old but cherished CD collection for that ’90s and Y2K nostalgia trip—Lisa Woodbrook has got you covered. She’s bringing the best of that era’s pop music to the stage with MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s. Think Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Shania Twain, NSYNC, Beyoncé, and more!
The singer is returning to her hometown, Perth, to debut her show after a year performing overseas on cruise ships. We caught up with her to hear all about this new production and reflect on 2024.
Last year you visited Perth in July with your show Heartfelt, where you shared your heartaches and triumphs through some of your favourite top 40 tracks. What was that experience like for you? What do you love about the music you performed in that show?
Heartfelt was an awesome way to celebrate my latest single ‘I’m Done’. It was an incredible feeling performing my own original music with some of Perth’s best musicians live on stage for the first time. It was pretty surreal, at one point I found myself realising – ‘oh yeah I wrote that song’! I also incorporated music from my favourite artists who influenced my own songwriting, in particular Sam Smith, it was amazing to perform their music along with classics from Adele.
Now you’re back with a new show MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s & 00s, what can you tell us about this show?
It’s a fun and high energy show, with epic tunes serving Millennial nostalgia.I’ll be performing some of the greatest bops from the 90s and 00s including songs by the likes of Britney, Shania, Kylie, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and much more, alongside two incredible dancers. I’ve never done a show like this before so I’m super excited!
It’s the perfect show for anyone that grew up in the 90s or even if you were out clubbing in the 90s. These songs were a soundtrack to some of the greatest times in my life and if that’s the same for you then you need to get a ticket!
Was it a hard task to select which iconic tracks from this era you were going to perform? How did you make your selections?
It was tough but we got there! I had a list of killer tracks I wanted to include and would listen to them over and over again, finding funny stories and segues to include and then I finally got to the final list. With so many bangers to include I discovered a way to cover them all…it’s a fun surprise at the end of the show.
What made you decide to debut this show here at Perth Fringe?
It’s my hometown baby! Perth audiences are incredibly warm, fun and love to support local. Fringe is such a wonderful time of year and it’s a brilliant festival to be a part of and I’m so excited to debut MILLENNIAL: Hits of the 90s and 00s here!
Over the last year you’ve performed on international cruise ships, what are some of the key differences between performing on cruise ships and on land in places like Fringe?
It’s an awesome experience to perform on ships and at Fringe. On ships the theatres they have onboard are truly world class, seating more than 1000 people, plus I’m backed by a 7 piece band – it’s amazing! Fringe hosts such a variety of acts in wonderful spaces and I love the buzz of the festival – you can see so much throughout the whole month! Both types of audiences are brilliant, always ready to get involved and have a good time – I’m excited for what we have in store for the upcoming season!
You’ve got a fun trailer for this show, tell us about the filming of this teaser- it looks like a lot of fun!
This photoshoot was EPIC! We were shooting all night with the incredibly talented Jess Wharehinga. I have worked with Jess for a few years now and I can always trust her to bring my vision to life. From the costumes, to the movement, the track and the comedy – this created such a motivation for me to truly write my most entertaining show yet!
Describe your show in 5 words!
Fun, energetic, hilarious, platinum, cheeky!
