Powerhouse Diva Alert: The Lady Boys of Bangkok

The Lady Boys of Bangkok know how to open a Fringe season bringing their infectious, sparkling and feel-good energy to the Aurora Tent Stage.

This show is for the people who never tire of clapping their hands, smiling from ear to ear and maybe getting up and dancing (or even participating in a cheeky number). The large cast made up of gorgeous and insanely talented performers execute a variety of upbeat and powerful numbers from Abba to Lady Gaga; every era is covered in this production.

Impressively each routine comes with its own choreography and costumes; pre-warning to those in the front rows you are in the feather, sequin and glitter splash zone!

The cast, consisting of Nook, Lilly, Naomi, Bibi, Jubilee, Appo, Amy, Ole, Arthur and Oak, is all equally talented and evidently, they’re all natural performers. A special shout out must go to Ole who delivered the comedy numbers and turned every audience member in the front rows into willing participants in whatever dance or questionable movement they were encouraged to perform. Ole also gave us a very impressive Tina Turner impersonation with plenty of head flicks and kicks to boot!

I did attend on a preview night, meaning some technical hiccups were expected. This occurred in the form of many abrupt cuts of music, sometimes creating awkward silences between numbers. This is certainly easy to amend, and I have no doubt something they will have smoothed out as the run of the show progresses. These moments were very quickly rectified once the numbers began with each performer’s charm, charisma and stage presence taking over all else.

The Lady Boys of Bangkok is on at Fringe World from Jan 21-Feb 15.
